Preakness Preview

1. I'll Have Another 5-2 (Flower Alley-Arch's Gal Edith, by Arch) Doug O'Neill – Everyone wants a Triple Crown winner. It's been 34 long years since Affirmed won a spirited battle with Alydar to become the 11th horse to complete the feat. Little did anyone know at the time that a third of a century later we would still be waiting for the 12th. So can I'll Have Another get it done? Yes. Maybe. It will not be easy, but he has a chance. As good as he has been this year, the thing I like best about him is his freshness, and he absolutely seems to be thriving at the perfect time for trainer, Doug O'Neill. His ability to find the perfect position early will be put to an extreme test by the talented speed of Bodemeister. It will be up to the Derby winner and Creative Cause to go after him at the right time if they want to defeat him. I like I'll Have Another as much as the other two, and I want to see a Triple Crown winner as much as everyone else.

2. Creative Cause 6-1 (Giant's Causeway-Dream of Summer, by Siberian Summer) Mike Harrington – So the Kentucky Derby was the first time he finished out of the money, but you know what? Creative Cause actually ran a big race. He was in traffic early, before being forced out wide at a key juncture of the race. All told he ran farther than anyone in the field, and still only lost by three lengths. I tend to think the Santa Anita Derby finish, where he was nose-to-nose with I'll Have Another, was more of a true result than his unlucky fifth place finish at Churchill Downs. Like the top one, he has enough tactical speed to remain in touch of the speedy favorite, before uncorking his consistent ability to finish well. At 6-1 or so, Creative Cause offers value, especially if the Derby winner goes after Bodemeister early.

3. Bodemeister 9-5 (Empire Maker-Untouched Talent, by Storm Cat) Bob Baffert – What can you say about his back-to-back performances in the Arkansas and Kentucky Derbies. They were simply marvelous. With no Hansen or Trinniberg in the Preakness to force him into overly fast fractions, the Preakness may be Bodemeister's race to lose. His fate may come down to the tactics used by his two most serious competitors. If either the Derby winner or Creative Cause decide to go after Bodemeister early, it could create a similar six furlong split seen in Louisville, setting things up nicely for the one who lays behind early. Or maybe Bodemeister is simply too fast and will not be caught. As the favorite, I am willing to try to beat him.

4. Went the Day Well 6-1 (Proud Citizen -Tiz Maies Day, by Tiznow) Graham Motion - There are a few things I know for sure about this Team Valor charge ... he is a stunning horse who is still improving, and he ran a big race in the Kentucky Derby. So why don't I include him with the big three? I just have a feeling that the race setup in Louisville was more suited to him than what will happen at Pimlico. Having said that, if Bodemeister's hand is forced early and often on Saturday, this one certainly becomes the main threat to be charging down the lane.

5. Daddy Nose Best 15-1 (Scat Daddy-Follow Your Bliss, by Thunder Gulch) Steve Amussen - He drew raves for two weeks at Churchill Downs as the horse that was getting over the racing surface brilliantly. The big question going is was did he have the class to compete with the best. Unfortunately, we may have found the answer, as he struggled home in the middle of the pack. If you can forgive the Derby by assuming he didn't fire because of the size of the field, then you will get solid odds on a horse who might be the best of the longshots.

6. Teeth of the Dog 20-1 (Bluegrass Cat-Deputy Reality, by Deputy Minister) Michael Matz – A well bred son of Bluegrass Cat, Teeth of the Dog has made steady progress in each of his three starts since running a well beaten third in his December debut. In his latest, he ran a solid third in the Wood Memorial at odds of more than 50-1. The improvement makes me believe that this is a horse with a future, but keep in mind, in the Wood he was really no match for the top two. That form was the opposite of flattered when those two, Gemologist and Alpha, came back to finish far back in the Kentucky Derby. My favorite of the new shooters, but this year, that is not saying much.

[Find out all the latest info on the Middle Jewel on the HRN Preakness page]

7. Brimstone Island {SCRATCHED} (Tiznow-Broad Sound, by Broad Brush) William Campbell - I love the breeding of this one, with talent and distance on both sides of his pedigree. He also has demonstrated improvement when running in two-turn races. Having said that, his form to date, breaking his maiden in claiming races, and going 0 for 4 in much weaker stakes races than the Preakness, leaving me to make a huge jump in the imagination to believe he can make a big dent in the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown.

8. Zetterholm 20-1 (Silver Train-Holy Wish, by Lord at War) Richard Dutrow – Here's a nice New York-bred colt with a strong closing kick. I was impressed by his last while taking a stake at Aqueduct going away at the finish to win his third straight. The problem of course, was that race was at a flat mile against statebreds, while this is the Preakness. If the pace is fast enough, maybe he makes a run, but more likely he just finds thing a little too tough on Saturday.

9. Optimizer 20-1 (English Channel-Indy Pick, by A.P. Indy) D. Wayne Lukas – Usually when a Hall of Fame trainer continually says good things about a horse, I listen, but in this case, I am having trouble hearing what the trainer is saying. My big hope for the Kentucky Derby 11th place finisher, Optimizer, is that D. Wayne does not burn him out in all these races over his head before he can really get going as a very talented turf horse.

10. Cozzetti 30-1 (Cozzene- Lemon Drop Cello, by Lemon Drop Kid) Dale Romans – Another horse that I think will ultimately be best on turf, (although he has not shown it yet) seems overmatched on Saturday. His Tampa Bay and Arkansas Derbies were nothing more than OK, and clearly he is a distant second string to the resting Dullahan in the Romans barn. I have great respect for Romans, but this one would seem to be only a place holder until Dullahan returns in the Belmont.

11. Pretension 30-1 (Bluegrass Cat-Main Streetin', by Street Cry) Christopher Grove – He actually beat Brimstone Island over this Pimlico main track last time, and despite their respective rankings on their list, there is probably not too much between the pair. However, of the two, I think the former is the one who has much more room to move up at the 1 3/16 mile distance of the Preakness.

12. Tiger Walk 30-1 (Tale of the Cat-Majestic Trail, by Kris S.) Ignacio Correas IV – On the positive side, he has hit the board in each of last three starts, all in graded stake competition. The bad news is that he was not a real threat to win any of those starts in the Withers, Gotham, or Wood Memorial. Things should only get worse against the best of his generation on Saturday.

13. Guyana Star Dweej {SCRATCHED} (Eddington-Special Feeling, by Pine Bluff) Doodnauth Shivmangal – Well, I gave Trinniberg zero chance to win this year's Derby, so I might as well go out on a limb and say this one has just as much chance to win the Preakness.

In a bit of a surprise, it was I’ll Have Another running down the favorites – and the incredible run of Bodemeister – to win the Kentucky Derby. Two weeks later he’ll look to make a similar run to claim the Preakness, and take us to Belmont with Triple Crown hopes alive.

Getty Images
Quite frankly, such an outcome is only one of two that I would pinpoint as likely. Coming off of a Kentucky Derby that was littered immense talent, I must confess myself somewhat disappointed in the field that will take to the starting gate in Baltimore this Saturday. Gemologist is hurt. Dullahan will wait until the Belmont. As will others like Union Rags. And so we head into the Preakness with an eleven horse field. Below, I provide a sentence or two on each horse in the field, and a breakdown of how I expect the race to progress.

1 – TIGER WALK – 30/1: Closer who has yet to run will in a grade 1. With a lack of speed at the front, don’t expect much.

2 – TEETH OF THE DOG – 15/1: He’ll be fresh and fowardly positioned. Could be there, worth betting as a live long-shot, but not much more.

3 – PRETENSION – 30/1: Has yet to turn in a decent graded stakes run, but he’ll be near the front, and with long odds he’s worth playing as a live long shot. Smart to get it, but don’t expect to cash that ticket.

4 – ZETTERHOLM – 20/1: Having never run in a stakes race, it’s difficult to feel confident in this horse. Add to that his below average speed figures, and that task becomes harder yet. Still, he’s turned in quality performances this year, look for him to make a play for the money as a long shot.

5 – WENT THE DAY WELL – 6/1: With J R Velazquez aboard, you can’t discount this colt, but I’m not expecting much. Went The Day Well came on strong at the end of the Derby, but the Derby featured exponentially more speed to run onto than this race will. Worth taking in exotics, but I don’t have high hopes.

6 – CREATIVE CAUSE – 6/1: If you’re looking for a closer, this is the one I’d look to before the 5. He’ll be more forwardly placed and has more experience coming from mid pack in big races. Don’t love closers, in this race, but if I had to take one, it’d be Creative Cause.

Getty Images

7 – BODEMEISTER – 8/5: The runner-up in the Derby, Bodemeister has been installed as the favorite and for good reason. He ran an unbelievable race in the Derby, but the distance and early speed proved too much. Here, the race is shorter, and he won’t have to run nearly as hard to keep the lead wire to wire. In my opinion? Here’s your winner.

8 – DADDY NOSE BEST – 12/1: The Asmussen trained colt is an interesting choice on Saturday. In the Derby, he was simply outclassed by much of the field. In a thinner, less quality-packed Preakness, Daddy Nose Best could be there. Still, he likes to come from the back of the pack, and I don’t look to any of the closers as likely, here. Worth playing in exotics, though.

9 – I’LL HAVE ANOTHER – 5/2: The Kentucky Derby winner enters the Preakness as the second choice, though has it about as well as he could have in one of the biggest races of the year. He’ll be able to sit comfortably near the front – which is his preference – and will likely be tasked with no more than running down he who he just ran down. Bodemeister. Clearly the second choice.

10 – OPTIMIZER – 30/1: Wouldn’t be the right pick in a Thursday afternoon $20,000 claimer at Saratoga.

11 – COZZETTI – 30/1: If he falls below 50/1, bet him. If not. Stay the hell away.

THE RACE: Out of the gate, expect Bodemeister to rocket to the lead. He does best from the front and I expect he’ll be looking to run almost the same race he did in the Derby. I’ll Have Another and Teeth Of The Dog will settle in behind him, with Pretension a length or two behind them, with the rest of field grouped together at the back into the final turn and down the backstretch. It’ll be a reasonable pace; having learned from the Derby, and with no need to, Mike Smith won’t push the colt too hard. Through the final turn, expect Bodemeister and I’ll Have Another to begin to separate themselves, with Zetterholm, Daddy Nose Best, and Creative Cause revving up their runs on the outside. But as they hit the top of the stretch, and as Pretension and The Teeth Of the Dog slide back, I see the first and second place finishers in the Derby bolting away from the pack. They’ll battle hard down the stretch, but ultimately, I see Bodemeister – who his connections have said has come out of the Derby better than he entered – clipping the wire first. I’ll Have Another will take second, with Creative Cause third and either Zetterholm, Daddy Nose Best and Went the Day Well fourth.

WHAT TO BET: Honestly, other than some long-shot across the boards I’m not sure there’s a lot to bet. The obvious bet would be an exacta with I’ll Have Another and Bodemeister, though such an exacta would likely cost more than it would pay. A trifecta with those two and Creative Cause is interesting, but again, the payout would be minimal. I love Zetterholm and Cozzetti as crazy long shots, and will likely play them when their odds fall enough.

Though the Preakness doesn’t look to feature the kind of quality the Derby did, it should be a great day from Maryland. If the race develops like I believe it will, we will be looking at a developing rivalry between two impressive three-year-olds. And though I expect Bodemeister to take the race, let’s hope I’ll Have Another runs down his foe again and brings us to Belmont with another battle between the two looming, and with Triple Crown on the line.

Preakness Stakes

Fresh off their 1-2 finish in the G1 Kentucky Derby two weeks ago at Churchill Downs, I'll Have Another and Bodemeister are the main attractions for Saturday's G1 Preakness at Pimlico, the second Jewel of the Triple Crown. In all, six Derby runners are back in Baltimore for the Preakness while five new shooters will look to leave their mark on an American classic.

Let's break it down!!

1 - Tiger Walk 30/1

Notes: Trainer "Nacho" Correas adds blinkers for this, a move I never understood as this isn't just some race: it's the Preakness!!! For as long as I live I will not get trainers making equipment changes in big races but that's what he's doing. He hasn't made much noise since breaking his maiden four starts back in his first dirt start though he did manage to grab minor shares in the G3 Withers, G3 Gotham and G1 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct in his last three. Obviously a cut below but Desormeaux sure knows his way around Pimlico and has two Preakness wins under his belt. In what's become the norm for him, a minor award is probably his ceiling. **Note -- Jockey Ramon Dominguez replaces Kent Desormeaux, who was removed after failing a Breathalyzer test. This will be the 10th Preakness for Dominguez, who finished second aboard Scrappy T in 2005 and First Dude in 2010.

2 - Teeth of the Dog 15/1

Notes: Matz returns to the scene of what probably qualifies as one of the saddest days of his life as Pimlico is where the ill-fated Barbaro broke down passing the stands for the first time in the 2006 renewal. The romantics out there have that in the back of their minds too, I can almost guarantee it and that just means more "bad" money on this guy. He did manage to get third in the Wood Memorial last out at 53/1 but someone had to and the first two finishers didn't run a step between them last out in Louisville. His biggest impact on the race will come in the first five furlongs or so as he appears to have some speed but I doubt he'll be around when it really counts.

3 - Pretension 30/1

Notes: Posted a minor upset in a minor stakes at Pimlico on Derby Day but it was in a suspect five horse field. Runner-up Brimstone Island was declared from the Preakness earlier in the week with his trainer saying he wasn't right while third place finisher My Adonis was the lone AE in the Derby field, took a van to Louisville the previous Tuesday then vanned back east on Friday morning when he was scratched from the Derby. His two starts against graded stakes competition earlier this year in the Gotham and G3 Illinois Derby weren't good at all. Like Teeth of the Dog, he has some speed to have an effect on things early but should be far back late.

4 - Zetterholm 20/1

Notes: Interesting week for Dutrow as he'll saddle this colt in the Preakness then fight for his professional life in court a few days later as he's staring down the barrel of a ten year ban. Since taking over his training at the beginning of the year, Zetterholm has improved with each start and has won his last three, albeit all have come against New York breds. He's gaining ground at the end of each of his starts, a great sign especially when you consider he's taking on about an extra eight of a mile or so and I like that Dutrow is sticking with the up-and-coming Alvarado who's been aboard for his last two scores. If the pace is quick, and I imagine it will be, this guy will be coming late. In my opinion, he holds the best chance out of all the new shooters at upsetting the Derby runners.

5 - Went the Day Well 6/1

Notes: These connections fell a ½ length short of turning Belmont into a mad(der?) house last year when their Derby winner Animal Kingdom came that close to nailing Shackleford on the line. The question is did they, more specifically Johnny V, learn anything from last year? Animal Kingdom was too far back and it cost him. This guy didn't have the best break last out and had to close from far back but his earlier races lead me to believe he will be much, much closer to the pace on Saturday. If he is, he could very well be the one to pick up the pieces. It'll be his second start with blinkers, an angle I like a bit better than first time blinkers especially with younger horses, and unlike some others, has done some of his best work on shorter rest as evident by his G3 Spiral score coming just three weeks after his maiden victory. A top tier prospect for me.

6 - Creative Cause 6/1

Notes: I can't remember my opinion changing more about a horse than it has about this colt over the past few months. When they hit the wire in the G1 B.C. Juvenile last year, he was my Derby horse. But as this winter wore on I started falling out of love with him. I don't like that he can get goofy in the stretch or the fact that he shipped back to California after the Derby then back east for this, but the thing I hate most is that he lacks the knockout punch. He just can't seem to finish the job. Yeah, he was wide in Kentucky but plenty of horses were and he almost always seems to be wide so it's really not an excuse. He just doesn't finish the game and I still think he has soundness issues. He's starting to get the "wiseguy" vibe too, which I love in this case because I'm tossing him out completely.

7 - Bodemeister 8/5

Notes: "By the time 2012 comes to an end there's a good chance they'll be erecting statues of this colt," is how I started my Derby Breakdown about this guy. It may still happen, but I'd like to take the statement back officially. Now, he may go about his business and cropdust the other ten runners in here but he won't be doing it with my money on his nose to win. I couldn't believe he was on the lead in the Derby over Trinniberg and originally though it was Smith's fault. Obviously I was wrong since he's back in the saddle so I have to think that Baffert told him to do it which blows my mind. And I have to think he'll be cutting the pace again. This will be his sixth race in 125 days and while that wouldn't ordinarily be a deal-breaker for me, it is when it's the first six starts of your career as a three-year-old, especially when the last two came in a 9 ½ length romp in a quick time and in the Derby where he went 22 and change, 45 and change, 09 and change and a flat mile in 1:35. Ten other Derby runners went a sub :46 half in front; none of them finished better than tenth. That may make him a freak, but in my book, a freak would have gotten to that wire first in Louisville and he didn't. Combine that with the fact that he'll be the big favorite and will probably get some cheap speed to keep him company early and I can't see him winning. I'll use him underneath in gimmicks in case no one else fires but not on top.

8 - Daddy Nose Best 12/1

Notes: As I get older, I realize just how many stupid things I've done in my life and one of the things I've done numerous times up until a few years back is fall for horses like him, ones that weren't being considered for a race before being thrown into the ring at the eleventh hour. Asmussen was thinking about running two or three others in here and didn't even mention this guy until he declared the others. Some vote of confidence, huh? Was getting a ton of attention heading into the first Saturday in May and unlike some others that probably weren't 100 percent going in or had legitimate trouble during the race, this guy just didn't fire. You could draw a line through it if you like (another line I refuse to fall for anymore) but keep in mind that his lone dirt win came after a ridiculously fast early pace that he took advantage of over one of the aforementioned Asmussen runners that isn't in here. Not for me.

9 - I'll Have Another 5/2

Notes: I would never, ever, ever take anything away from the Kentucky Derby winner; I have too much respect for the race to do that but even his connections would admit they couldn't have scripted this years' Run for the Roses any better. He drew outside any of the early traffic trouble, managed to save ground even though he broke from post 19 and never had a straw in his path en route to a solid victory. Odds are that simply will not happen again. Perfect trips are a supremely rare commodity so getting back-to-back ones is improbable to say the least. He had Trinniberg to do the dirty work last time but if Teeth of the Dog or Pretension don't leave out of there he'll be the one chasing Bodemeister which will not only make Gutierrez use him more in the early running but it'll also take him a bit out of his element as he likes to stalk and pounce, not chase and battle. He's a fresh horse, having run just three times this year but I'm sure there is a reason or reasons for that too. He's in my top tier but he may actually need to be the superhorse and not Bodemeister if he's to win this.

10 - Optimizer 30/1

Notes: Really, D. Wayne? REALLY?!?!? What can he possibly be telling his owners that they allow him to run this horse in here - he put in the greatest eleventh place finish in Derby history? He's started seven times on dirt and ran good once. ONCE!! At least he gets a money Triple Crown rider in Nakatani whose next win in a Triple Crown race will be his first. What a joke.

11 - Cozzetti 30/1

Notes: Shackleford was as gutsy as they come on the front end the entire way last year for Romans to get his trainer his only Triple Crown race win to date. If this guy follows in his stablemates' hoofprints he'll likely come from dead last to win. His last two were sneaky good even though he only managed minor awards and the post won't matter since he'll be far back early anyway. I'm not sure he can win unless everything goes picture perfect but I can see him spicing up the exotic wagers. Using him underneath.

Spurs / Clippers over 194

Guaranteed Play I am going to be looking at the San Antonio Spurs and La Clippers to go over the posted total of 194 points.

The real value in this game lies with the total and not with necessarily with a side. There is no question that the Spurs are an impressive team...they have scored over 110 points in their last 13 out of 14 games played, they are as close to a sure-thing as it gets in betting that they will at least hit triple digits in the game. Meanwhile the Clippers now know that the only way they are going to be able to hang with the Spurs are to score more points. In the Memphis series they were able to rely on their defense to keep them in the game, however this Spurs team is so efficient on offense, that the only way to beat them is to outscore them. The Spurs are a high percentage shooting team and if you don't make each possession count, they make teams pay when they miss their shots.

In the early part of the year the Clippers were a run and gun team and was in the top 5 in the league in points scored, they have recently gotten away from that mentality, but to have any chance at pulling out a win in this series, that is what it is going to take. A fast paced, running up and down the court game is what I expect in game 2. I would look for LA to shoot early and often in order to keep pace with the scoring. The offense is going to have to step up. Chris Paul and Blake Griffin will have to try and drive the ball inside instead of banking on the outside shot like they did in game 1. When you drive to the basket, it is almost a given that you will be fouled...the more fouls you get the more points are scored with the clock stopped. Those points pile up and should be a key contributor to this game going over.

If the Spurs get to 100+ points tonight, that means that the Clippers only have to hit 90, which they should be more than capable of doing. The Clippers didn't play a bad game last time out, they just didn't convert some shots in the second half and the Spurs did. It was actually a much closer game than the final score indicates. If the Clippers get some more production out of their offense in trying to match the Spurs score for score, I don't see where this game stays under. This game should hit the 200+ mark by the final whistle. Take the over

Take Spurs / Clippers over 194 as your Guaranteed Play today
